I usually do it using the grade node, editing up r, g and b and channels seperately. You really should be able to match them that way. If you have to use more than white, black and gamma corrections, the images are suspiciously different which is not a good sign.
When matching, make sure to overlay the parts you want to change next to each other, so you can check for a smooth transition. Our eyes usually play tricks on us. And also, to start out, look at one colorchannel at a time. If there is grain or noise in your images, it's often worth it to blur everything a few pixels so it's the perceived color you're matching.
