I think you will find SEO experts out there that live by the removal of
extensions for one reason that may or may not matter to you in a general
sense.
I'm led to believe URL length can play a part SEO, and we all know URL
wording certainly does. So I guess there are those who figure that the
extension is utterly redundant text in an important space, and that space is
better used on text that matters. The 4-5 characters in an extension is
another word worth potentially alot more.
I always try to remove them as long as the core system doesn't have a
problem with doing so dynamically. They simply aren't serving any purpose at
any stage.

from what we have seen file extensions don't matter too much. we don't
have them and get quite good rankings with our platforms and i've seen
others having them with equally good results.
the only thing which is really old school and is hated by most search
engines is the
http://mydomain.com/index.php?page=blubb&whathaveyou=here...
the problem here is that google only sees index.php and has a really
hard time to figure out how to map the content to a url as it needs to
store the get string as well.
