Back when Gord Fraser was riding for Motorola and passing through Ottawa he
stated to me that his bike had gone "soft" over the season. When asked to
explain he mentioned that the bike was more flexible in high speed corners,
flexed to the side more during the initial jumps of a sprint and did not
accelerate nearly as quick as it had when it was new. When I got on his
bike for a short parking lot spin it seemed really nice and stiff but he
insisted that it was just not the same as it was.
The conclusion to me would be that unlike science where one measurement is
worth a thousand expert opinions in sport loss of psychological confidence
in your bike is worth a thousand lost opportunities. You have to feel good
to do well, you have to think that your bike is stiff and reactive.
