Buy second hand. I recently helped someone buy a $90 Norco 12 speed. It
was about 12 years old and looked like it had no more than a 1,000 miles
on it. The brand new Zefal fenders were worth $30. It was perfect for
commuting as well as casual touring.

I get the impression there are quite a few club members that are upgrading and
unloading their steel framed tourers/racers. Watch the Classy Ads for
bargains, or submit a WTB ad.

If you commute in winter, buy a clunker just for that purpose. Once salt
has been spread on the roads, none of the bikes I want to hang on to go
back on the road until April showers have washed away any remaining salt
and crud from winter's snowbanks.
