There seems to be precious little real science behind determining optimum
crank length. One popular magazine did do a set of tests with different
people testing identical bikes with different crank lengths, under different
conditions. I vaguely recall the results were counter intuitive and
surprising.
The good news is this means you can ride whatever is comfortable to you.
What aspect of 170mm cranks (the ex"normal" size that has seemed to have
moved to 172.5...we haven't all gotten taller) is not suitable to you? Or
are you going on the assumption "because I AM smaller, everything SHOULD be
smaller, including the cranks"? I would propose that this is not reason
enough to seek shorter cranks.
Pain, now THAT might be a reason. I doubt it relates to crank length, and
until proven, I'd mess with other fit adjustments.
