Paddy Chapple's statement below (from newspaper article re drug clubs in Observatory) is way off the mark. ("Eighty percent of owners were on the side of residents, and were unhappy about criminals muscling in......") *Eighty percent of the clubs are definitely _/not/_ on the side of residents*.The patrolling, reporting and information gathered first hand by members of the ONW and NNAG shows this in carefully monitored and recorded data much of which has been presented to the SAPS on a regular basis. Paddy's claim is totally contrary to the reality of the (growing) problem. I would be very interested to test his claim with the data to hand. The days of Observatory's drug scene being populated by a majority of wannabe cool /'lets- live- in- Bohemian- Obs- until- we- graduate students'/ is long over. Customers come from all over to Obs to buy and sell drugs. Hard drugs. (Not only the floating- along- puff- a- bit- of- weed variety used by 'the students'). Recently a man in a Toyota when disturbed while shooting up (Heroin) in our street at 08h15 on a Tuesday morning sped off with the needle and syringe still embedded in and hanging from his arm. (second time). Thats hard drug use and definitely not passing a joint around on a Friday evening after lectures giggling, coughing and getting the munchies. Our street is (still in spite of the knowledge of Vetus Schola and SAPS) used by the street couriers to deliver to customers. SAPS will tell you that these runners hide deliveries in their mouths (under the tongue; swallowing if and when confronted) or in the anus. As well as orifices around the streets, walls, hedges, sluices, drains, public refuse bins etc. Obs is said to be a retail and wholesale trading area. (includes big deals conducted in the area). The silent majority appear to have no idea of the current situation in their neighbourhood....................... A few persistent and determined residents are striving (wo)manfully in the face of this mayhem to bring a modicum of order to Observatory. They know who they are. I am grateful and supportive of the professionalism of their efforts, paddy

Dear *ONW*

Brian Gray ([email protected]) spotted this on the IOL website and thought you'd find it interesting.

Brian Gray says: Bohemia...aka Observatory, known for free and easy habits, manners and morals. Former Czech kingdom, rapidly becoming a drug dealers' paradise. Stop the rot, or it's your property down the drain.

Murder, drugs threaten bohemia
A battle is on for the soul of Observatory, with some residents wanting local clubs to close down, claiming they are hotbeds of drug dealing.
