I don't think the problem is that people are in denialism or ill- informed about the drug problems in Observatory. Everybody knows that the Western Cape has the highest rate of drug abuse in SA and might even be in the world. The thing is that drugs selling and usage will never be stopped in this country of ours. All we can do as residents of Observatory is ensure that clubs get forced out of residential areas like ours and be replaced by business and restaurant which actually close at descent times. De Waterkant is an example of the same situation. 10-15 years ago De Waterkant had some businesses and lots of gay clubs with people selling drugs on the streets etc. Look at the area today, one of the most upmarket areas with all teh clubs moved out of the area and businesses taking over.
I do realise that the stigma of Obs as a student hangout place will never probably be obliterated, but hopefully the amount of clubs can be reduced, or moved out of the existing area with businesses taking over. For example, I see that Ethiwkeni Braai Lounge is closed, and hopefully a business will open there that will be supported by locals. But it still is a difficult situation. Then it also doesn't help that a new student hostel is being built around the corner from Obs. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "The Observatory Neighbourhood watch" group.
