Bev, To answer your question, yes, this Sunday, I woke up to a club's faint but annoying enough doof doof doof... It was 4.30, I searched but the music stopped before I had time to find it, otherwise all was quite on Main Rd with barely a soul around, except a well dressed young lady with her boyfriend standing by, desperately pissing on the footpath, whom I made a point of embarassing by sticking on the pathway and sternly walking past her. Gauging by her expression, that was enough. I dont dispute the rogue element of our neighbourhood. I've lived here long enough and frequented enough establishments to have a fair idea of what's 'going down'. And to be frank, I dont think anything is happening here that wasn't happening 6 years ago. But Yes we still need to clamp down on licensed premises flouting the law (I am victim of their noise pollution, and call the police to complain regularly) , Yes the Police need to gain more intelligence and clout against the crime underbelly, Yes we need to minimise unruly behaviour and Yes I dont dispute that we as a community need to band more together. That said, my impression is that things really aren't as what Paddy or some members of ONW report it to be. Whatever statistics are up or down, what's most important for me is that overall I feel safer in Obs now than I did 6 years ago. Thanks in large to those dedicated to our community. So that's why I object to someone going to the press with , let's admit, a good dose of here-say, all to the detriment of Obs' reputation. That's what's going to scare people away more than the odd bunch of shmozzled goons and seedy dealers lurking in the shadows. And correct me if I'm wrong, rumour goes that Paddy is planning to move to the UK? Now wouldn't that be convenient for him...
