Dear Paul, My interpretation of “was told I cannot be armed”(by joint decision by ONW), I would think means that people should not patrol as ONW while being armed. As you say you are “Not prepared to do it”, but that is you need to accept why ONW made that call. I would think that if you have a licence to carry a weapon, there is nothing to stop you as an individual without an ONW vest, going for a half hour walk about twice a week and reporting back to others. Just do it in your personal capacity.... Why not? Regards, Marc

We should be very concerned only if we do not act on if with full energy ! Hi Rosemary and all, What I am suggesting is to have a sudden step up from the community in local volunteer block walk-about ‘patrolling’ (with ONW guidance). The suggestion would be to aiming for a minimum 1 hour out on the street a week, getting everyone out on foot , with or without a dog or on a bike. The ‘block’ or group of local street gets out together at a particular time when there should preferably be an intro discussion on the way, to discuss tips on how to observe and report (for those who would benefit from those experienced in the art). We then book a slot or log in for various volunteer slots depending how the local area coordinator wishes to arrange things. Those who just cant do it, could be encouraged to contribute to a mini local kitty to fund short term additional part time informal semi-skilled input, to fill in some of the time slots that remain un-attended, particularly in the turn out is not yet enough to fill all slots. This is not a suggestion seen as linked to or via OBSID! I see it in a similar to asking someone to to help cut my grass or paint my boundary wall. I would ask around who would help me, maybe use someone I trust to join me on the walk about and pay them a tip, much like someone who does dog walking. Its clearly informal and its clearly a once-off or a short term effort to make a difference over the next two months only and see the difference! After that one can look at it again. In two months we will have become familiar with the process, met and got to know more neighbours thus building community spirit, become activist so we continue acting in our own time. We learn to appreciate the effort made by others who continue to help to keep us safe. I am also quite prepared to put in extra money to OBSID to employ more patrollers - I believe both camera's and patrollers are important, but understand that people walking the beat are good deterrent. Could someone at OBSID come up with some scheme whereby people could pledge more money for more patrollers - perhaps if a particular road contributed for a patroller in that road or block? Let's keep the momentum going people - feeling more optimistic about my 'hood' by the day!! What if there was a placard that participants could put up on their wall, to show that they're involved, and to encourage others to participate? Here's an example of the kind of thing I mean. (I just knocked this up to give a flavour of the idea. The details could change. I switched it to four hours a month because I thought people could get into volunteering just one hour a week.
