The new fortran compiler warns about uninitialized access when those
"= ZERO" are missing.
I just read the code and guessed zero to be a sensible "default"
return value, but I think it's simply a failing of the compiler in
recognizing that XERBLA, called in the next line, actually sets the
variable's value.
