Yea, I wasnt going to get into that nor tranisient intermodulation
distortion, which is a problem when attempting to get pure audio. In fact
there are lots of variables which vary from reasonable to the inane such as
gold plated rca plugs - which are claimed to make a difference to the sound.

The Xing encoder, yes, but the decoder has always been pretty good I
understand. In any case the encoder is a moot point as its been upgraded to
the better I would assume; it is used by MusicMatch and is the one I
mentioned with cutout 20khz, it is fast, but not as good even as some
freeware ones.

I agree there - I forgot to mention too, about VBR (variable bitrate).

Yea, I have them somewhere, and intend using them with our freeware MP3
player when I have the time.

Q:But don't the file sizes start getting big as you crank up the sample
rate?
This starts to becone important if you write an app that plays MP3 in the
background and you want the install download to be as small as possible, but
retain good sound quality.

A: Not much more really, we are dealing with fairly significant
compressions, so a slight increase in filesize eg about 10-20% more between
128 and 160kb/s. When you are looking at the difference between a CDA
filesize of 30mb compressed down to 3mb then who cares?

Q:requests for our freeware player
A:we (Xue and myself) have just finished a significant upgrade.
He does his work on it in Japan, and I in Kiwi. He has just sent me his
updates to my last changes, but some of my code got lost in the translation
such as Eject and autoadd tracks when a new cd on a multiple cd player is
added. Plus a few more. Always the problem when you are working across
various language platforms ;-)
Anyway, I will release my update by the weekend and will post url here then.
Cheers,
Alistair+
