The prob is that if I try to
access my mail to download it then there is not room to copy it to a temp
file (on the server) before it is deleted so things get even more screwed up.
You could use tools such as MailWasher <www.mailwasher.com> which allows you to see the emails at the server before downloading and you can then delete or even bounce them.
mmm, I see that the MailWasher site is currently not available. Still, it's a good tool in the current situation.
