Hi All

I have had an ADSL connection (Jetstart - capped at 128k) working for the last
almost 2.5 years. Have only noticed the line dropping out maybe once a month or
so.

All of a sudden, about a month ago it started dropping out several times a day, to a
point where it is bordering on un-useable.

The story I'm getting from Telecom is that the line was marginal to begin with (I'm
nearly 4km from the exchange) and there is nothing that Telecom can (or at least is
prepared to) do. They have suggested that upgrading my modem (currently a Nokia
Ni500) might fix the problem.

Some questions, for people who know about these things:

Given that the connection was working well for so long and then suddenly turned
pear-shaped, it is reasonable for them to suggest that something has happened to
their network (which has tipped my connection over the edge of "marginal") and its
not reversable?

I know the Ni500 is a cheap modem, but is it likely that a more expensive modem
will fix the problem?

If it does fix it, it is clear that the state of the network is deteriorating - so how
long is
it likely to fix it for?

The only other solution that I can think of is to sell my house and buy one closer to
the exchange - a tad extreme. Are there any alternatives (in Rotorua)? I'd have
Woosh if I was in Tuatapere.

Thanks

Mark

PS. I got a new computer at about the time things started going wonky - but I can't
see that having any effect.
