I second that - look at the av comparitives site. Measures detection rates,
false positives, scanning speed, overhead and a few others and gives overall
ratings. Only tests those that score high in detection rates - the rest are
excluded.

Best detection rates amongst free AV were Avira which was second overall ahead
of all the well known names at over 99% detection rates (eg ahead of Nod32 and
Norton) - but scored lower due to false positives. None of them were 100% at
picking up all viruses though. I have used usually 2 av programs at once - well
3 at the moment on the theory nothing will get thru that way - Avira, the AV
that comes with Comodo firewall, and MS Defender (which is more malware I
think). Can agree Avira looks to be light on CPU usage....but does score a
few false positives. The comodo AV does not rate very high - at one stage it
flagged almost all of the D2007 BPL's (ok once I told it to ignore them), but
the firewall is truly excellent and the rival of most commercial ones - if you
think Vista UAC can be anally intrusive try running the Comodo firewal as it
monitors changes to system files and registry too - its free btw.
Trialled Nod32 once and was very impressed - never bold enough to pay the quite
high fees though - its such low overhead because I think its almost all written
in assembler. Has a good value site licence.
Avast also was quite good, but seemed a little bit more of a resource hog, both
the Avira and Avast updaters are reputed to work better than the AVG free one
as the AVG free update site is often way overloaded and updates may come in a
day or two late.
(For years I used Fprot, which was similarly low on resources as Eset, but
seems to have dropped out of the comparatives lists - when I ran it with Norton
it always responded before Norton did to anything coming in. I think Fprot
and Fsecure used to be the same and then split into two)
Lastly if you are with xtra, you can get McAfee free for one computer - look on
the telecom/xtra home page.
