Yes definitely a "brand name" as Zespri are not the only company handling
Kiwis, It's kind of like calling Kiwis "Satara" (another major kiwi company)

My understanding is that Zespri is the "brandname" (or maybe even the
varietal name?) of the newer (and locally bred) golden kiwifruit.

I think Zespri as a name was dreamed up so that the marketers would have
a lot more control over the brand internationally than they did with the
"standard" kiwifruit.  Would be more identifiable with NZ, less chance
of consumers getting confused with "inferior" overseas-produced
kiwifruit, etc.

Well, that's my vague understanding anyways.
