************************************************************ We need an operational definition for the term "OpenSolaris" ************************************************************ As in: An OS developer says "OpenSolaris", but really means "the source base managed by the ON Community on www.opensolaris.org". An enthusiastic academic says "OpenSolaris", but really means "the web site, communities and discussions hosted on the server at www.opensolaris.org". A student at Tsinghua University in Beijing says "OpenSolaris", but really means "?????". A committed distro developer says "OpenSolaris", but really means "the set of source trees managed by the various community groups on www.opensolaris.org, plus all the various distros that are built out of that source". A Technical Marketing whiz at Sun says "OpenSolaris", but really means "a new distro, built out of the various sources found out on www.opensolaris.org and elsewhere that is intended to become, like Ubuntu, a valued reference distro that could be the basis for many other derivative distros as well as a new Sun product". A webmaster says "OpenSolaris", but really means "the web-app that is hosted on www.opensolaris.org". ... I'm sure there are others as well... We've all seen the conflicts that come up when people try to have a conversation, but it turns out that each has their own conflicting definition for OpenSolaris: Ian says "I want OpenSolaris to be ...", meaning that he wants to explore the creation of a new distro, and immediately Alan tries to make sense of the proposal in terms of someone hijacking the ON Community... No wonder tempers flare :-) -John
