I respectfully disagree. The "unacceptable language" I see on these
discussions is _very_ tame compared to that occurring from time to time on
many, if not most, open source discussion lists. Indeed, the Open Solaris
project discussions are some of the most sanitized I've encountered.

Let's review what actually happened in this instance:

1) A number of reprimands were directed at various people by Edward Ned Harvey.

2) While many of us suspect that Edward is indeed an Oracle shill (I won't go
into the reasons lest it be interpreted as a "personal attack"), as far as I'm
able to discern he lacks any official authority.

3) These reprimands continued despite replies via private email explaining why
it was very problematic to comply with his demands due to Jive/Mailman
integration issues.

4) Some folks grew a bit irritated with these repeated postings, especially
when more polite hints were responded to in an arrogant and condescending
manner.

5) As may be the case with us old grey beards, we can become a bit crotchety
from time to time and loose patience with these young upstart whippersnappers,
and one such individual had the courage to do what would have happened long ago
on most any other discussion list. And I suspect would have also happened on
these had Edward been maligning Oracle.

I reviewed the TOS Alan linked to. And while Svein made no bones about the
matter, I don't see where he used any profanity, made any threats, etc. I've
noted many instances where Svein's post contain a fair bit of technical insight
that obviously come from a long experience with Unix, so it's not like the guy
is just looking for trouble.

Y'all might want to spend a bit of time on openbsd-discuss. You go mouthing
off there w/o knowing what you're talking about and you get your balls handed
to you in a sack. Interestingly enough, this tends to keep people from
mouthing off about that which they know not and results in a genral overall
humility and civility.

So yes, Dennis, I am 100% in agreement with your position on this and encourage
the OGB to take your suggestion under serious consideration.

As an aside, the wife let the pup in this morning. He was very excited, came
bounding into the bathroom whilst I was urinating, about knocked me over and
would have had I not crashed into a wall, tripped over him trying to regain my
footing, and let loose a few curses whilst I was at it in my irritation. This
does not make me a bad person, nor indicate that I do not love my dog. Only
that sometimes it is difficult to deal with inappropriate and irritating
behavior in the best possible manner. The pup did get the message that he
needed to stop doing what he was doing, however, and appears to be no worse for
wear.
