This is the nature of almost any business decision. Microsoft announces
a new language/protocol/API. They say it will be the hottest thing since
sliced hobbits. You decide to get in on the ground floor, sign the NDA,
get the early developers kit, and struggle through the process of
developing for a moving target as the product gets closer to release
and....

Microsoft kills it a week before ship. Sorry, you lose.
It ships....and it sucks big time. Sorry, you lose.

Or, you could wait until it ships...then see how it does...THEN begin
development, a year behind the competition. Upside -- you lose nothing
if it fails. Downside -- you're late getting to market.

Remember OS/2? Businesses counted on it supplanting DOS. It didn't. Max
OSX was supposed to be out this summer -- it won't be. Nicrosoft "Bob"
was supposed to be a new paradigm -- it wasn't. Battlefield Earth was
supposed to be a blockbuster -- it bombed. "Phantom Menace" pulled in a
lot of money at the box office, but the toy line performed only
adequately.

Part of being in business is taking risks, gambling on which is the
winning horse to be tied to. That's the way it goes.
