Frankly, I think I could do all my gaming with:
a)D&D/D20 for high-fantasy/space opera/cinematics. (Though I'm very eager
to see how they do CoC, if that hasn't been killed)
b)BESM for rules-lite generic rules
c)GURPS for rules-heavy generic rules
d)Hero for superheroes
Obviously, having more choices than that is ideal, but the world will not
end if the current melange of rules systems was dropped down to 5 or 6.
What if the effort put into Rolemaster was, instead, put into making a
variant D20, with only the 'new' rules needed? What if Palladium just
published setting, race, and class info for 'D20 Rifts'? Would we honestly
claim this would lead to a serious dearth of creativity? Is there any
REASON for Rifts to have a system of its own, when it's pretty much a
much-mutated D&D anyway?
I'm a system whore -- I collect systems just because I like them. I'm also
not representative of the majority of gamers. I'd rather see the hobby
flourish, and if that means systems for systems sake becomes more of a
niche market, so be it.
