No, not obviously. Having to learn equivalent rules for different systems
that do not add to the final game's flavor is redundant, and certainly isn't
"obviously ideal."

Sure--that way, they aren't beholden to TSR at all.
But there *is* a reason to have it be d20, as well--people who either won't
learn themselves or can't get their players to learn the new rules will be
more likely to try it.

Here's a wild idea--have the "new systems" released under the OGL.
Creativity in that niche market will flourish... and while sales *might*
slow, the rules would be more readily avaliable. (Of course, rules whores
like Lizard would buy the systems anyway.)
