In general, a "dice-pool" system is a system where you
roll different numbers of dice depending on what your stat is --
as opposed to D&D3 where you always roll 1d20 and add in the
appropriate stat.
WEG's D6 _Star Wars_, FASA's _Shadowrun_, Last Unicorn Games'
_Star Trek_ and _Dune_ RPG's, and White Wolf's _Vampire: The Masquerade_
et al are all dice pool systems.
"Silhouette" is the name of the system used in Dream Pod 9's
games: _Heavy Gear_, _Jovian Chronicles_, and _Tribe 8_. You roll
a number of d6's equal to your skill (1-6) and take the highest
roll. If there is a tie for highest, add +1 per tied die (i.e.
two 6's -> 7; three 6's -> 8).
