Silhouette is the game system which underlies Dream Pod 9's HEAVY GEAR, JOVIAN
CHRONICLES, TRIBE 8, and GEAR KRIEG RPGs and tactical games.

Other significant dice pool systems include SHADOWRUN and the Storyteller
System (White Wolf's house system -- underlying VAMPIRE, WEREWOLF, WRAITH,
MAGE, CHANGELING, HUNTER, TRINITY, and ABERRANT).

Basically a dice pool system is one in which your Attribute and/or your Skill
is measured in a number of dice.

In the Storyteller system you add your Attribute and Skill together, and roll
that as your "dice pool". You then compare each individual die you rolled to a
Target Number and count the number of dice which are "successes" (either higher
or lower than the Target Number, depending on the system). The number of
successes determines how successful you were.

In the Silhouette system, OTOH, you roll a number of dice equal to your Skill.
You then take the highest die result and add your attribute to it. This number
is then compared to the Target Number.

I've also seen systems in which the dice in your pool are totalled -- although
these generally seem to be busted.

The essential component, however, is that you have a variable dice pool --
instead of having a single, consistent dice roll which is modified by your
stats; the stats modify the number of dice in your pool.
