Paradoxically (since we are talking about it), I always though kobolds were 
little dog creatures.  Guess it came from starting to play D&D before the 
MMI came out, but our group's story was that kobolds were a race of dogs who 
were magically transformed by a sorceress to serve as her slaves.  Some of 
them escaped and (since pups breed so quickly) pretty soon they were ... 
well, everywhere.

I always pictured them as little 3-foot tall (long) pekinese walking on hind 
legs.  Stupid little pushed-up-noses made tham more fun to bash!

Also, since they were less than one hit die in 1E a fighter could hit as 
many of them a round as he had levels - sort of a "proto-cleave".

Ah, the good old days...
