>I simply stood open mouthed when someone said "try to >imagine playing D&D with the SRD, having never seen an >illustration of any of the creatures" and found that >to be an insane and unbelievable comment. It was done >for years. Oh come on! That post never, in any way, denied or inferred that "It was done for years" wasn't true. More to the point, you're comparing apples with oranges. Today there is a much very different level of sophistication to what there was back in those very early years. We're here to talk about the D20 gaming system, and it has a ruleset where gamers mostly resort to some kind of battlemat, to play it correctly. It's a *different* game now. Even in 2nd edition you pretty much looked at the AC presented in the book, and largely went with that. Nowadays, with flanking, shield bonuses not necessary applying, tower shields' effectiveness being very dependant on actual physical characteristics, cover in general etc., it's far more important to be aware of the actual physical makeup of your monster races. It makes a big difference whether your Mind Flayer is basically human shaped (ie. capable of picking up a shield), or some other bizzare shape. The machanics now has a level of detail that it previously didn't. Just take a look at the recent posts on this board, it's basically about how people are going to provide artwork and background, consistent with gamers expectations from the MM - without getting into legal trouble. Today's game, and the game you refer to, are mechanically two quite different games, with quite different needs in their levels of sophistication. Sorry if the distinction was so subtle as to leave you open-mouthed, faced by the insane and the unbelievable. Hope you're okay now ;) _________________________________________________________________ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com _______________________________________________ Ogf-l mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://mail.opengamingfoundation.org/mailman/listinfo/ogf-l
