Okay, item creation costs are one of those things that have always annoyed me. Use of the term "base" to refer to several different things in the same process, confusing wording, etc. has always made me scratch my head (and likely other publisher as well, judging by the number who exclude creation costs from their item descriptions.) So, here is what I've been able to discern is the formula and explanation of terms that I should be following (he said as he prepares to sit down and calculate the costs on a good deal of items.) Any comments or corrections would be welcome.

Formulas
Market Cost = Base cost + physical component cost + XP Component gp cost

Base Cost = gp cost of items effects, based on various tables in the item creation section of the SRD (e.g.,
Spell level x caster level x 2,000 gp)

Creation Cost = Base Cost + physical component cost

XP Cost = 1/25 Base Cost + XP Component cost

Terms
Physical Component: expensive item, such as sword or pearl
Caster Level = equivalent level of the caster that the items component spells are cast at
XP Component = XP cost for spells required to create item; base price +5 gp per XP
