As John astutely points out, the "its there because it
has to be" answer does not mandate unclear OGC
designations.

I agree, to some extent, that "it is there cause it
has to be." As producers, I think we would all (or at
least the vast majority would) prefer to just have a
license to refer to D&D and skip all this OGL d20
stuff and not have to put any legal crap in the books
other than "D&D is copyright WotC". So I understand
that sentiment. Because, hey, the only way we get to
make this stuff is to use the OGL. So it is a
necessary evil.

But that doesnt mean one's OGC definition has to be
vague. THAT part is the publisher's choice. The FACT
one has to use the OGL is mandatory, but how one
chooses to designate is up to them.

I would argue that the fact something is mandatory
does not justify sloppiness or a "we dont care"
mentality. I'm not saying Mongoose is doing that. I
dont know. I dont have the products. And I must step
up and say that the one time I talked to Matt about
some open content he was more than cooperative and
happy to help me with it and give me permission. So I
dont want people to take this email as talking about
Mongoose, but rather talking about the motivations
regarding designations in general.

The fact that you must use it does not dictate the
manner in which you use it in all cases. How one
chooses to designate OGC is one of those cases.
