I don't see this mutually exclusive. What is needed is a
standard syntax, with free choice for the wording of
each standard element. Brian already has this in his 
proposal: you can write <version> and <card-specific> 
in any way you want, but their position is fixed, and
they are (I hope :) mandatory.

It's easier to tokenize if the order is known, and if the 
only optional tokens are at the end. The more you change 
strings w/o sticking to a recognizable standard, the more 
difficult for us to handle our end of support, especially
when trying to identify troublesome drivers or hardware. 
When somebody has a problem with a game, they call us first,
and only then ask the driver supplier.
