1. "Is HSI the same as HSL?" Nope.
2. "I understand that some algorithms will need to modify HSL individually. Am I wrong in understanding that adjusting contrast can be done on the original channels once you know the scale factor?" Yes for the contrast algorithm I need only L. But for the box filter I will need H and S. 3. "You said, "give me the formula", and it's not that simple. Do we want to assume a particular color space and encoding? Allow for others? Detect it automatically?" Ok I see what you mean now, this is beyond my current knowledge.
