Yes, timing is a first visit.  have you checked the output voltage of the
coil?  Obvious but what is the condition of spark plug wires?

it could be the carb but replacing it should be the option of last resort.
check that your burning the right octane level and I would not use any alcohol
based fuel.

You could have a massive carbon buildup at the top of each cylinder.  You could
have leaking valve oil seals.  Could be that intake and exhaust valves are
sticking open or closed.  valve timing?

is it overheating?  an abnormally hot engine can cause premature detonation.

Check that the advance on the distributor is working. Failing that, I'd buy
a rebuilt carb. My experience is that these carbs have been through so much
that home rebuilding may not buy you much. I have a 1969 Datsun pickup
(4-cylinder) that has done this, but it comes and goes over a year. It is
running great just now. .bill in corvallis

Subject: [old-chevy-truck] Carb Problem

Hi Guys,

My stock '54 235 has a problem. It runs like the accelerator pump doesn't
work, but when looking down the throat and operating the throttle I see a
strong jet of gas, indicating that it does.

After driving several miles and fully warmed up, pressing the accelerator
too far too fast produces in an impressive backfire through the carburetor,
particularly at low RPM.

The timing is correct and it runs great in every other way. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Dennis
