The biggest problem with our carburetors is just what Bill says. They've
been rebuilt and worn so bad that they're in bad shape. I suspect that the
power piston isn't working and is causing your problem

I've got an old friend in Milford, MI that has made a business out of
repairing single barrel carburetors on International tractors. He also can
redo our carbs. He's set up to machine the base where the throttle shaft
goes through and put in bushings to bring them back to standard. He's not
cheap, but not overly expensive either.

I'd recommend getting in touch with him and have him go through your carb.
I might mention that he's the best there is in repairing Quadra Jets also.

Subject: [old-chevy-truck] Carb Problem

Hi Guys,

My stock '54 235 has a problem. It runs like the accelerator pump doesn't
work, but when looking down the throat and operating the throttle I see a
strong jet of gas, indicating that it does.

After driving several miles and fully warmed up, pressing the accelerator
too far too fast produces in an impressive backfire through the carburetor,
particularly at low RPM.

The timing is correct and it runs great in every other way. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Dennis
