Oooh. Good question.  My wife is going to be better able to address this,
but my first thought would be: Alcohol *may* affect others, especially if
the drinker drives home.  But smoking will *definitely* affect others just
by the fact that the 2nd hand smoke is toxic.  Secondly, cigarettes are
designed to be more addictive than they would be as pure tobacco.  Alcohol
naturally creates addictions in some people, but as far as I've heard it
hasn't been chemically modified to make sure that you get addicted to it.

Other than those things, they're probably pretty equal in their destruction
to the individual.

Why is it that we, "our current society", apply such a strict standard to
tobacco and not alcohol?  Both are obviously hazardous to the individual as
well as others close by, whether that be a stranger or family.
