[Winona Online Democracy]

Dear Winonans...

Having an adult book store within a community is always a trying
ordeal. And as has happened in Winona, it has polorized our community.
We seem to have two significant sections of our society that would
rather like to make jabbing jokes at one group to purtposefully stir their
embers. Then the other group out right proclaims that we should accept
nothing less than the out right destruction of the other.
In this last bit of sattire is a person (and by far not the first
person) that has done nothing but tell those in the religious right that
they are UGLY, while they themselves believe in their personal beauty. This
sort of bickering only helps millitancy and can only lead to the butting of
heads.
Unfortunately, Adult matterial IS a family issue. I believe that if a
bookstore of this nature finds its way into a community, then IT has exposed
US. I believe that if the people that truely want to see the Adult store
leave should do so by advocating for family strength, and moral education.
The Adult store has taken advantage of our rights under the constitution,
but so can its opponents.
Truth, we do see an added population during the school year and we
could blame 'outside influences' for bringing a need for such a store.
But if that is the sole issue, then why hasn't it been here before?

PEOPLE of WINONA, we are a free people. MOMS and DADS of WINONA if we
do not seek to drive the market influences that created this 'bookstore' out
of our town then all we have done is to insure more 'ADULT' oriented
business to thrive inside our own borders.
Ladies and Gentlemen of WINONA, I believe that you can prove that
WINONANS are a resposible people, and unlike some people that want some
mystical government to solve all their ills, that we are dignified because
we can overcome social evils through better families and responsible living.
People, there is much more to this bookstore than meets the eye. It
did not just pop up over night. But maybe, if anything, has pointed out
some of the things we need to concentrate on.

Shall we even get into the horrors committed by
people who believed that their respective sacred
texts (Bible, Koran, Baghavad Gita, etc.) instructed
them to do so?

We need to examine real vs. favored/perceived
evils in our city. Favored evils often don't
provide the hard data as evils, but are treated
as such: these could include crack cocaine and
pornography. Real ones might be apathy,
intolerance and booze.
