[Winona Online Democracy]
Personally, I think all teens should start out with low-paying, menial jobs-
it builds character and empathy, and you can't start at the top. I spent my
teen years and college working at various low paying jobs which eventually
led to higher paying jobs with more responsibility. I have a bias that
everyone should have to wait tables at least once in their lives. I was
always amazed how rude and inconsiderate customers could be when I was a
waitress, I always figured it was because they'd never had to do it
themselves and didn't know how difficult it was.
The other side of this issue for me is, I worry about employers taking
advantage of younger workers. This is a first opportunity for many younger
teens to be exposed to older teens and young adults without supervision,
which is how a lot of kids get access to alcohol, drugs, etc... I also
found it to be a place where girls are exposed to sexual harassment by older
men for the first time.
So, I think kids should work, but I think parents need to know what's going
on too.
