[Winona Online Democracy]
After reading the recent barrage of posts regarding this issue it seems to me we have
gotten somewhat off the track here. Although the discussion about whether or not
homosexuality is a sin, immoral, or whatever is interesting, it begs the question of
our debate.
The question really isn't whether homosexuality is right or wrong but whether the
United Way was right to make the decision they did.
To date no one that i have read has managed to articulate a good reason why they were
wrong without resorting to a religious or quasi-religious debate on the "merits" of
homosexuality.
Perhaps it is not possible to separate the two, but the bottom line for me is not
whether homosexuality is right wrong or indifferent (for the record i will state that
in my opinion to say that homosexuality is wrong makes about as much sense as saying
being left-handed is wrong) but whether the United Way was justified in stopping
funding to the Boy Scouts when they refused to sign the United Way's policy on
nondiscrimination.
When the question is posed in those terms it seems that the United Way would be wrong
to continue to fund the Boy Scouts ~ or any other organization ~ that did not
sign the policy.
