[Winona Online Democracy]

Reading the posts on the situation in China i decided to post a few somewhat random
thoughts i have on the subject.
First, as i understand it the dispute regarding whether or not our spy plane was in
international air space or in Chinese air space stems from a different interpretation
of international air space. Apparently China claims their sovereign territory extends
further out to sea than other nations, including the US is willing to except. Hence,
China says the plane was over China and teh US claims it was in international air
space.
Regarding other incidents Cherisa referred to, if you all recall during the bombing of
Kosovo a couple years ago the United Nations "accidentally" bombed a Chinese
embassy claiming that the CIA's maps were outdated and they didn't know it was the
embassy.
Beyond that, i basically agree with Cherisa. With W. in the WH any incident of this
kind makes me very "nervous". If you recall, after the recent air attack on Iraq he
made a claim that there was evidence China was helping Iraq re-build it's military and
said he would "send Beijing a message". Now this. Is it a coincidence? Perhaps, but i
can't help thinking how similar this appears to the Gulf of Tonkin incident circa
1964. If you recall, the Maddox was supposedly in international waters when it was
attacked by the North Vietnamese too. Later it was revealed the it had actually
penetrated the coastal waters of North Vietnam and had in fact recently been equipped
with sophisticated spy equipment.
There is a big ugly black wall in Washington DC to remind us of the results of that
little incident.
