[Winona Online Democracy]

Someone (Curtis, I believe) recently posted a question about the "solidness"
of Winona Area Public School's academic program . . .

Today's Pioneer Press ran a story about the high percentage of first year
college students that graduated form Minnesota high schools who were in need
of remedial courses at Minnesota's public colleges and universities.

To quote the article:

"Nearly one in three students from the class of 1999
who went to a Minnesota public college or university
took a remedial class because they weren't prepared
for the rigors of college work."

Guess which public school system has the BEST percentage of students who are
not in need of remedial courses?

To quote the article:

"Statewide, Winona High School had the smallest
percentage of graduates -- 8.3 percent -- needing
help in their first year at state public college. Kurt
Kiekbusch, the school's dean of students, attributed
it to quality teaching and counseling and the ``constant
scrutiny'' of curriculum."

Congratulations to the teachers and staff at Winona Area Public schools
whose skill and dedication have obviously had an impact on our students as
the apply what they have learned to new challenges.
