[Winona Online Democracy]
Cherisa, I will attempt to comment on your post.
Parents are teachers too and social skills and responsible behavior, are in
my opinion, the primary teaching domain of parents and most importantly in
the early stages of learning or resolving their peer conflicts. There are
some bad "parent" teachers and when that happens all of us pay the price.
The schools, friends, neighbors who some have expanded to the "Village"
recognized that when we see bad adult behavior being passed along we "may"
need to intervene. Our failure to do so especially during the formative
years is a mistake.
With regard to those with disabilities no one would expect the same
standard to apply without some obvious attention to the nature of the
disability. However, many times, people with disabilities are capable and
have talents that simply blow you away when they are allow to develop to
their potential. I think immediately of a young girl who sang on Channel 4
or 5 about a month ago who was severely handicapped but had the voice of an
angel. She could stand head to head with the best on her ability to make
beautiful music. We were told that one of our sons had a learning
disability when he was about ten, we would not accept that, today he is
an Senior Engineer with a major global corporation at 29.
I would be the first to admit that I would be the last person who would
want to or is competent to teach my children Chemistry, Biology, Language,
Algebra, Plain and Solid Geometry, Trigonometry, welding, art and music.
I rely on the schools to provide a learning process which provides
comprehension in those subject areas. Physics, carpentry, photography,
accounting and Aztec History I like!
In the case of my three children, the public school teachers did, we helped!

PS And for the parents, if you want to call them that, who could care less
about their kids --- well that's another discussion for another day!!!

>>Why, thank you Mr. Double!
>>
>>I, too, believe that the teachers of Winona Area Public Schools and WACS
>>are doing an excellent job! Especially when one realises that a public
>>school such as ours must provide a quality and equitable educational
>>opportunity for ALL children . . the hearing impaired, visually
>>handicapped, those with special physical needs, emotional and/or social
>>needs, unique learning styles, children from caring and involved families,

>>
>>It is a wonderful and worthy profession; teaching! Teachers change the
>>present and touch the future. Maybe we should have a
>>if-you-can-read-this-thank-a-teacher day! Can a parent, an individual, a
>>community ever truly thank a teacher enough?!
>>
>>So . . . thank you, Paul, for recognizing the importance of attracting and
>>keeping quality teachers in the Winona area.
