[Winona Online Democracy]

Paul writes that no child ever fails, only the teacher... I disagree. What
if the child fails to come to class? What if the child's parent is out
drinking all night and never comes home? What if the child has learning
disabilities and/or does poorly on tests... I could go on and on, but saying
that if a child fails it's only the teacher's fault is taking responsibility
away from the child and his/her parents. Our teachers are good, but they're
not omnipotent- if they were we'd have to pay them better ;-)

I applaud our public schools for improving their scores- remember they don't
get to pick and choose the best and brightest, they have to teach everybody.
And I also applaud the many parents who are volunteering in and out of the
classroom this year to help with their children's education. I hope with
budget cuts that more people than ever have volunteered at our public
schools.
