I see from there that GCL's version is 2.6.7-101.  However, it is known
that anything other GCL-2.6.8pre is problematic for AXIOMs.  Now, there
is some confusion about the numbering.  I do not know whether what
Debian calls 2.6.7-101 is in fact what GCL mainstream calls GCL-2.6.8pre
because the later has never been released but I see that Camm regularly
updates configure and rules for GCL-2.6.8pre.

While writing this message, I managed to reproduce the "drop" problem
with GCL-2.6.8pre on an x86_64 running openSUSE-12.1.
