Part of the cost of getting the much better rates on prices are sales quotas, in stock inventory (distributors), service (returned parts etc), dealing with the VAR/Resellers directly with your own personnel instead of the manufacturer having to deal with them.

In some special very RARE circumstances you may see a manufacture purchase BACK stock from a distributor for some reason or other.  You almost never hear/see the manufacturer carrying the stock for the distributor.

Actually the pre-buy situation is a fairly common one in the market.  In order to get access to the 'FIRST' delivery you commit to purchase ahead of time, send in your money, and wait for it to arrive.

 
I think that is very true for businesses that have to make a living from the sales. They have a interest in making a profit, and therfore take some risk.

In my case I would not do it for the money, and I would therefore accept a lower profit.

Another concern though, might be warranty. In e.g. Denmark and perhaps all EU countries, the law requires all purchases to have at least a 2 years warranty.
