Well, as a hardware vendor who had to cover costs of a product for three years, what would you do to ensure that it didn't put you out of business?
Mind you, I want products I design to be as reliable as possible, but I can see how that might be a bit of a concern. Even for something without moving parts, this is something to be concerned about. I guess we have to be very verbose in our explanations of what will void the warranty. Yes, if you try to desolder the RAM chips and put bigger ones on yourself, you'll have all the information you need to do it, but if you screw it up, well...
