Why? I already have audio out on my mainboard, as well as a separate sound
card (had it already, I figured it wouldn't hurt to stick it in), and both
are supported out of the box on Ubuntu, without anything proprietary. The
sound card is connected to my amplifier, and the sound from that is better
than that from the small speaker in my TV.

If there were audio-out on the card, it would make the card more expensive
(more connectors, right?), and I'd have to put an extra cable between the
video card and the TV. Or the video card and the amplifier. Either way, I'd
probably ignore the functionality and just use my existing sound card.

For a little higher end, there are the SB Live! (if they still exist) or
Audigy based cards that are supported by Linux. A home cinema with surround
sound is already pretty expensive, and buying a decent sound card to go with
it shouldn't be a problem I'd think. And I doubt we could compete with an SB
Audigy quality-wise anyway.

I say go the UNIX way: do one thing and do it right.
