If the direction of those LVDS links can be changed by runtime, then I would vote for 9 pairs, which can drive LCD module of any size.

If you are going to take the LVDS to a connector on the back side of the PC, wire there also 3.3V, 12V and a ttl output for backlight switching. Otherwise this TFT-panel-hookup could be realized in form of cable connected add-on, just like as the additional usb ports are.
