A) If you have something driving it now, look at the signals with a 'scope.

B) Find the model number and try google.  Try both the Sun model number
   and the make & model number of the actual CRT.

C) Ask Sun.

I have seen dip-switches used.  I have seen jumpers used.

One could write the mode into some sort of NVRAM on the board, but if
this is the system console, you have a catch-22.  You need a display to
show you what you are about to write to the board that controls the display.
Dip-switches or jumpers might seem old-fashioned, but they avoid this
problem nicely.
