That goes against the grain of old-school business thinking. "Free"
is scary for many reasons. One of the biggest is that there's no one
to blame if something goes wrong. Another is that when you license by
paying money, you have some reasonable amount of assurance that your
legal ducks are in a row. There's no patent holder for Vorbis, so
there's no one to pay license fees to, so whoever owns the patents on
it (and they assume someone does) will catch you at it later and sue
you for billions.

There's an interesting ethic there. You can't make money unless
you've spent some. Makes sense. But along with it comes its own set
of breaking of ethics. You won't use a patented technology unless you
can identify the patent holder, but once you do, you may decide to
intentionally violate the patent because the holder is not worth your
time.

Traversal is going to be subject to many of these concerns. We'll
never intentionally violate a patent, but if Traversal is seriously
threatened by some evil company trying to haul us into court, we'll
find out quickly just how much help the community is willing to give.
:)

Remember, Traversal isn't a separate entity. It's just a front for
certain appropriate business and legal activities of the OGP. If
Traversal is taken out, it's like cutting an arm off of the OGP.
