Some of us might know who you're talking about. Others of us don't even
know who Lorne is.

Sigh. Even the founding father of an open hardware group thinks of
releasing specs as giving up a money-maker.

We need a whole new economic system. Capitalism is killing people
and the planet. Communism didn't work out so well either. We need
a way to eliminate the motivation for trade secrets. Patents and
copyrights are supposed to do this, but they aren't getting the job
done, despite the widespread abuse of them.

Competition can be a good motivation, but it has a dark side.
Trade secrets in electronics are bad, very bad. but it gets worse.

PBS is showing a series called "Remaking American Medicine...Healthcare
for the 21st Century". In the 2nd episode, "First Do No Harm", they
talked about how hospitals compete against each other. If hospital A
finds a way to reduce infections (they were talking about the "superbugs"
that are resistant to antibiotics) they don't want to share that
information with other hospitals because they are competing. And there
was the problem of "We get paid to fight infections." This is obscene
beyond words.

We need better motivation for people and companies to share information.
Ideas?
