I imagine the IDC Connectors are of the low noise, high bandwidth variety designed for 100Mhz+ signals, where as standard .1 inch pitch
connectors provide nothing near that much signal integrity.

If we are discussing a slightly more expensive high bandwidth
connector vs low bandwidth cheap connector, I vote for the high
bandwidth. It is always better to have development boards be more flexible than needed, since even though you might not need the
features somebody else will.

There might be better grades of female connectors (lower capacitance) but the male connector is just two rows of pins set in a piece of plastic. I can look into this further, perhaps there are different grades of plastic, but it isn't going to make that much difference in price. The lowest capacitance would be individual pins but that would be expensive to install on the board.
