Curious. last I checked the free linux version did not install even on
whitehat. Google turned up a heap of other reports saying the same
thing and with no solutions after a full day of trying, I approached
and was told in my country they only know of the paid for version for
'that thing called linux' and it installed on Red Hat enterprise. I
emailed xilinx asking for more linux support and was effectively told
that it would not change - however that was mid 2006. The only
feasible install found at that time was for Windows and Wine - I had
it installed and working on an older version of wine. However at that
time any Xilinx updates/upgrades would not successfully install..

That the free version apparently installs on linux is interesting - It
appears to be a 1.7Gb download but you can order a dvd. International
Shipping costs are higher than I expected at $26.86 US.

Google turns up more these days:
Installing on f8 - after fixing the scripts and compatabilty

The Xilinx tools are compiled to support RHEL3 and 4. To run them on
any of the last several Fedora releases, install the Fedora package
compat-libstdc++-33.
One user reports success 'installing ISE9.2 and Webpack under Ubuntu.

Impact and USB apparently still requires the binary kernel driver
Jungo. Runs on RH but can be make to work elseware.

Mark may be able to provide some more info.

thanks for your work Terry. Now if only xilinx would only consider
supporting the spartan3 4000...?
