My understanding is that DGA is dead, and should never be used.

XVideo works fine over a remote connection. I suspect you're confusing it with 
Xshm (XVideo includes Xshm extensions). The latter is effectively just a local 
transport optimization between the client and server, and not something the 
hardware driver needs to care about.

The whole point of DRI is that it avoids going via the X protocol. However 
applications should never be using DRI directly. Instead they should be using 
OpenGL/GLX. The OpenGL libraries will then choose whether to use DRI or 
conventional GLX. In the latter case this should be converted back to DRI 
calls by the X server itself.
