One important thing to note. The XC3S4000 is not supported by the free
Xilinx webpack. Unfortunately list price for the ISE Logic Edition is
something like $2.5k.snip We don't have a solution for it yet.
Can it be driven by the command line?

Yes, but the license is still needed to generate the bitfile an the big problem is that the webpack doesn't even come with the datafiles for the 3S4000.

Might this be sidestepped by a computer connected to the net with a log on specifically for OGP participants? snip Or sending a file to another OGP member?

Perhaps we can find someone interested in fixing this problem. I haven't tried running the XP10 tools under Wine yet, but that would be a bit better than having to have a full Windows VM.

there have been many releases of Wine since the last trial - may work now..

Just have to address the programming problem.

As far as ISE goes, perhaps at some point we would approach Xilinx to either donate licenses are perhaps provide deep discounts for "community" or "educational" licenses for ISE.

You thinking of asking Xilinx to include support for this chip with the webpack? Sounds like it is worth trying..
